What is Releaf?
Releaf is a 100% plant-based, fully recyclable plastic made from PEF (polyethylene furanoate), developed by Avantium.
Why focus on PEF?
PEF has several advantages over traditional plastics like PET:
- Eco-Friendly: 100% plant-based and recyclable.
- Superior Barrier: 10x better oxygen barrier, 4x better CO2 barrier, and 2x better water barrier than PET.
- Lighter Packaging: Higher mechanical strength allows for lighter-weight packaging.
What applications is Releaf suitable for?
Releaf's PEF can replace materials like PET, glass, and aluminum in products such as:
- Bottles for drinks (soft drinks, water, alcohol, fruit juices)
- Food packaging
- Films and textiles
When will Releaf products be commercially available?
We expect Releaf to hit the stores in 2025. The official opening ceremony of our first commercial production plant is scheduled on 22 October 2024.
Is Releaf recyclable?
Yes, Releaf is fully recyclable. It can be recycled alongside PET bottles using existing recycling systems. PEF has received interim approval from the European PET Bottle Platform and the Association of Plastics Recyclers in the US.
Is Releaf biodegradable?
While PEF in Releaf isn’t readily biodegradable in natural environments, it does degrade faster than PET under certain conditions. Its main environmental benefits are being plant-based, recyclable, and having a lower overall impact throughout its lifecycle.
Who is the parent company behind Releaf?
Releaf is developed by Avantium, a leading company in renewable and circular polymer materials.
