What is releaf®?
Releaf® is a plant-based, recyclable plastic made from PEF (polyethylene furanoate), developed by Avantium.
Why focus on PEF?
PEF has several advantages over traditional plastics like PET:
- Eco-Friendly: Plant-based and recyclable.
- Superior Barrier: 10x better oxygen barrier, 4x better CO2 barrier, and 2x better water barrier than PET.
- Lighter Packaging: Higher mechanical strength allows for lighter-weight packaging.
What applications is releaf® suitable for?
Releaf®'s PEF can replace materials like PET, glass, and aluminum in products such as:
- Bottles for drinks (soft drinks, water, alcohol, fruit juices)
- Food packaging
- Films and textiles
When will releaf® products be commercially available?
We expect releaf® to hit the stores in 2026. The official opening ceremony of our first commercial production plant was held on the 22 October 2024.
Is releaf® recyclable?
In June 2025, releaf® received official European RecyClass approval as fully compatible with existing PET recycling streams—so releaf® bottles and multilayer PET/PEF packaging can be recycled together with PET without disrupting standard recycling processes; this recognition is supported by an interim endorsement from the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) through June 2027 and Critical Guidance from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in the US, making releaf® certified for recycling in both major markets and ready for widespread commercial launch.
Is releaf® biodegradable?
While PEF in releaf® isn’t readily biodegradable in natural environments, it does degrade faster than PET under certain conditions. Its main environmental benefits are being plant-based, recyclable, and having a lower overall impact throughout its lifecycle.
Who is the parent company behind releaf®?
Releaf® is developed by Avantium, a leading company in renewable and circular polymer materials.
